Oklahoma is one of only two states in the country that have an official state meal (Louisiana is the second). You’re going to need a lot of pans, hungry guests and a big table to serve it.
The official state meal was chosen in 1988 to reflect the state resident’s cultural and agricultural background. The menu: fried okra, cornbread, barbecue pork, squash, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, corn, strawberries (Oklahoma’s state fruit), chicken fried steak, pecan pie and black-eyed peas.
In homage to our state, check out “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond’s must-have recipe for pecan pie for this holiday season.
