Fifty years and six months ago, millions of television viewers tuned in to watch the crowning of small-town Oklahoma girl Jane Jayroe as Miss America in 1967.
Jane Jayroe was born in Clinton in 1946 and was raised in Sentinel and Laverne. She may be best remembered as a TV news personality in OKC and Dallas.
Jayroe recalls her adventure to Atlantic City to compete in the Miss America Pageant, one of the most watched television shows on the air. “I never even considered it (to win),” said Jayroe. “It was just pure joy for me to be there.”
