Sen. Bill Coleman’s suicide prevention legislation was recently signed into state law requiring all school IDs in Oklahoma to display the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number, as of July 2023. This bill is intended to help address the high suicide rate among Oklahoma children and young adults.
The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has announced the national lifeline will transition to the easy-to-remember 988 number this summer.
The 988 Mental Health Lifeline will operate as a 24/7 call center with certified crisis specialists who answer calls, connect to and dispatch local services and mobile crisis teams.
