Live sports are back in OKC

OKC Energy FC restarted their season on July 13 against FC Tulsa.

After a long hiatus, live sports returned to Oklahoma City last week as OKC Energy FC took on FC Tulsa in a match that ended with a 1-1 draw. This was the first major professional sporting event with fans attending in Oklahoma City since March 11.

OKC Energy FC has taken a number of health and safety measures to ensure fans feel comfortable while inside the stadium. All of the 2020 USL Championship games will air on the ESPN family of networks and the full OKC Energy FC schedule can be seen here. We hope to see you at the game!

The first week of summer has begun and questions linger about the status of football. Will there be a season, and if so, what precautions will be put into place?

The high school season is set to return the last Friday of August. On the collegiate level, one can expect football to proceed as normal, as in-person classes are expected to take place on campus in the fall.

Players could have new safety protocols and for fans, the stands may look different. In fact, in 1918 people wore masks to the games in order to cheer on their favorite teams!

Manhattan Construction’s newest project aimed to ease parking concerns in OKC

The highly anticipated Omni Hotel and Convention Center will open in Oklahoma City later this year. These grand openings will bring an increased need for additional parking in this area.

Flying under the radar to help this influx is the construction of a new parking garage on the corner of E.K. Gaylord and Oklahoma City Boulevard.

This project was awarded to Manhattan Construction at a competitive cost bid in August 2019 and broke ground in October 2019. It will be completed in fall 2020, in conjunction with the Convention Center, to help alleviate parking and traffic concerns in the area.

Mick talks MAPS 4 and Thunder Win

I’m old enough to remember voting for MAPS in 1993. Ron Norick was the mayor. I didn’t know him well but he seemed like a good, honest guy.

That first MAPS passed with 53% of the vote. Today, few people will admit to voting against it because, eventually, it changed everything. As I voted to pass it, I admitted to friends that, of all the MAPS projects, the idea of building a canal in that abandoned warehouse district called Bricktown seemed crazy.

But fast forward 26 years to today, Bricktown has 7 million annual visitors. Guess it turned out okay.

His goal is to bring Oklahoma to the world and the world to Oklahoma. The governor identifies areas where Oklahoma can compete with his enthusiastic, contagious attitude: “We can do it. We will do it. I expect us to do it!”

A deeper dive into MAPS 4 with Mick Cornett

Last issue, I wrote a MAPS 4 Q&A. For this issue, I wanted to look deeper into the initiative.

So, this is MAPS 4?

Yes, the original MAPS was approved by voters in 1993. Maps for Kids, passed in 2001, rebuilt the Oklahoma City Public Schools system and included money for suburban districts. MAPS 3 was passed in 2009.

Is MAPS 4 downtown focused?

No, the intention of the original MAPS was to invest in the urban core. Previous MAPS initiatives spent millions of dollars outside the city core. MAPS 4 will likely spend even more throughout the city.

Eight distinguished Oklahomans will be inducted at the 92nd Annual Oklahoma Hall of Fame Banquet on Nov. 21 at the Cox Convention Center. They will join the 698 others who have been inducted since 1928.

The Oklahoma Hall of Fame was founded in 1927 with the purpose of recognizing Oklahomans with the state’s highest honor.

Kayla lobbies U.S. Congress advocating for the passage of laws that would give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to earn fair and equal wages.

“Kayla’s an incredible asset to this organization,” NDSS President and CEO Sara Hart Weir said.

Down syndrome has never held Kayla back. Kayla meets with elected officials at the Capitol and educates them on ways Congress can improve the lives of those who are differently abled.

Oklahoma Turnpike Authority: Drive aware, arrive alive

When it comes to driving safety, there’s no room for mistakes on Oklahoma’s roads, highways and turnpikes.

Distracted driving and passenger safety are critical issues facing Oklahoma and should concern everyone. The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reported that vehicle crashes were responsible for 628 deaths in 2016.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) wants to see these numbers decline as many of these fatalities and collisions are preventable. Safe driving is the responsibility of anyone who operates a vehicle, and OTA wants drivers to take every precaution to give everyone on the road the best chance of reaching their destination safely.

The Junior League Of Oklahoma City celebrates 90th anniversary

The Junior League of Oklahoma City hosted an event celebrating the renovation and expansion of the Oklahoma City Zoo’s jungle gym. More than 660 volunteers from across the community contributed 5,161 hours April 12 -15 to update and refresh the playground and expand its footprint. They added components such as the Ability Whirl for children in wheelchairs, all new slides, a Climbinator, an Expression Swing, new ropes throughout and all new paint on every single structure.

The project commemorates Junior League of Oklahoma City’s 90th anniversary and returns the League to a project they helped establish 15 years ago.

After having a vision of an Irish man who was in search of finding faith, St. Patrick became a priest and was sent to preach the Gospel in Ireland. He converted thousands and used the shape of a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.

St. Patrick’s Day became a holiday in the 17th century and has grown into a celebration of Irish culture filled with parades, music, dancing and a whole lot of green!

Feed the Children donates 1 millionth H.E.L.P backpack

Feed the Children distributed its 1 millionth H.E.L.P. (Homeless Education and Literacy Program) backpack with community partner support. H.E.L.P promotes school attendance and completion across the nation.

Samuel, the recipient of the 1 millionth backpack, attended an event with his mother to receive food and essentials not knowing he’d be the 1 millionth nationwide recipient.

“We want to make it easy for kids to stay in school,” Feed the Children Director of Education Partnerships Erin Carlstrom said. “For some homeless or at-risk children, these backpacks are the first thing they’re given that’s theirs.”

Rex and other early Mardi Gras revelers popularized the use of throws. By the late 1800s, krewes tossed handmade glass beads from Czechoslovakia. Plastic beads, manufactured in China, rose to popularity in the 1960s, when producing glass beads became costly.

Early Birds, a free Smart Start Central Oklahoma program, helps prepare students and parents for the classroom. The nonprofit specializes in school readiness for central Oklahoma’s kids, which helps children become better learners and classmates before entering a classroom.

New entertainment district proposed for Norman

The University North Park Entertainment District is a proposed mixed-use entertainment development consisting of retail, offices and housing anchored by a new 10,000-seat multipurpose arena, which the University of Oklahoma plans to lease for men’s and women’s basketball.

Located along I-35 between Robinson and Tecumseh in Norman, the entertainment district would augment the UNP’s existing retail, which has grown to more than 1.3 million square feet since 2007 and generates $13 million annually in Norman tax revenue. The entertainment district will provide young professionals and others with a unique place to live, work and play.
