OKC former mayor interviews Tulsa mayor

The role of the American mayor was certainly highlighted during the 2020 pandemic. City leaders, led by their mayors, were forced to rethink public health and reset their economies.

In Tulsa, Mayor G.T. Bynum is now in his second term. In addition to dealing with the pandemic, Bynum has dealt with a number of other large-scale issues. I was asked recently by PBS affiliate WNET to report on what cities were doing to return to normalcy.

I chose to interview Bynum and let him explain the extraordinary challenges he and his city council have faced the last few years.

Tech and housing find creative ways to help in Ukraine

In these first days, different methods to help Ukrainian citizens and families have risen around the world. Performing due diligence is a challenge as scammers are certainly a problem.

Airbnb has offered 100,000 refugees free housing, and also has launched a special service that lets users offer housing or direct donations. By booking stays with no intention of actually going, Airbnb users have found a creative way to transfer money to residents in need.

Etsy has waived all fees for sellers in Ukraine, and Elon Musk put his Starlink satellite network in action over the country to provide internet access.

How to register to vote by Oct. 9

With Election Day rapidly approaching on Nov. 3, now is the time for Oklahomans to register to vote.

Oklahomans have a couple options for voter registration. If you wish to register to vote in person, contact your local election office for information on when and where to vote. If you prefer to register by mail, visit the Oklahoma State Election Board’s voter registration page and use the OK Voter Portal “Wizard” to get started.

The deadline to register to vote in person in Oklahoma is Friday, Oct. 9, and mail-in voter registration must also be postmarked by that same date.

After a contentious primary season here in Oklahoma, we now know who many of the general election candidates will be for local, state and national offices in November. There are, however, a number of high-profile races that will be decided by runoff elections on August 25.

Two of the more interesting races headed for a runoff in the Oklahoma City area are Sen. Stephanie Bice and businesswoman Terry Neese vying for the Republican nomination in Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District, as well as Norman police officer Tommie Johnson III challenging incumbent Oklahoma County Sheriff P.D. Taylor, also for the Republican nomination.

A deeper dive into MAPS 4 with Mick Cornett

Last issue, I wrote a MAPS 4 Q&A. For this issue, I wanted to look deeper into the initiative.

So, this is MAPS 4?

Yes, the original MAPS was approved by voters in 1993. Maps for Kids, passed in 2001, rebuilt the Oklahoma City Public Schools system and included money for suburban districts. MAPS 3 was passed in 2009.

Is MAPS 4 downtown focused?

No, the intention of the original MAPS was to invest in the urban core. Previous MAPS initiatives spent millions of dollars outside the city core. MAPS 4 will likely spend even more throughout the city.

An updated look at the 2020 electorate

We are just 16 months out from the 2020 presidential general election and campaigns on both sides of the aisle are starting to take shape. The biggest questions remaining: Out of the 24 Democratic primary candidates, who will stand out? Moreover, can that person beat President Trump?

According to some polls, many of the Democratic candidates have a good shot at beating the president in a head-to-head matchup. However, if we learned anything in 2016, it is this: Donald Trump can defy the odds. One thing is certain; the next 16 months will definitely be interesting to watch.

A look at the 2020 electorate

No matter which side of the aisle you’re on, we can all agree that the 2020 election is going to be an important one. So which groups will make the biggest difference in the coming year?

According to a study done by the Pew Research Center, minority groups and Generation Z (ages 18-23) voters could have the most significant impact on the election. However, according to the same study, older generations are more likely to vote.

Regardless of age, race or political party, what matters most is that you get out and exercise your right to vote in 2020.

Oklahoma’s turnaround starts now

The sun broke through the clouds as Oklahoma’s new governor, Kevin Stitt, began his inaugural address on the south steps of the Oklahoma State Capitol with 3,000 in attendance. The governor emphasized the five pillars of education, economics, infrastructure, health care and efficiencies that could turn Oklahoma into a top-10 state.

He also recognized former Gov. Mary Fallin for her years of public service and leadership. In his first week, the governor visited several state agencies and announced new cabinet members, many of whom are from the private sector and bring new approaches to governance and other issues.
