As part of a $1.4 trillion spending package signed by President Trump on Dec. 20, 2019, the national minimum age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products was raised from 18 to 21. This sudden change has left many store owners and customers wondering when the new law takes effect and what it means for their bottom lines.
According to Oklahoma State Department of Health official Stephanie U’Ren, the new law took effect immediately. However, there’s still uncertainty, and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website says, “additional details on this issue will be provided as they become available.”
