For George Bush, family always trumped politics

by Jan Schroder

In the March 1980 Republican primaries, George Bush had already lost what he called his “Big Mo” to Ronald Reagan. He bounded off his campaign plane in conservative Augusta, Georgia, for another obligatory meeting with local reporters.

In those awkward moments before delivering his standard remarks, I wandered over and introduced a subject I sensed he would prefer to politics: “I knew your son Marvin at UVA,” I said.

“You know Big Marv?” he asked enthusiastically and then, as was his mien, steered the conversation toward me and my family and background – much to the annoyance of other waiting reporters.
