A U.S. Navy submarine, missing for 75 years, has been found off Okinawa, Japan. The USS Grayback was among the most successful submarines in the U.S. Navy in World War II, sinking 14 ships.
The discovery was made by the Lost 52 Project, a group of privately funded undersea explorers whose mission is to locate all 52 WWII submarines lost by the U.S. Navy.
Three Oklahomans were among the sailors lost with the ship in 1944, including First Class Radio Technician Robert Vernon Hansen, Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate Lee Carroll Stanford and Pharmacist’s Mate Ross Lillard Capshaw.
