Oklahoma recently unveiled its first marker on the Civil Rights Trail, a historic initiative led by Sen. Kevin Matthews that commemorates significant Black towns and Native American sites across Oklahoma, acknowledging their key roles in the Civil Rights Movement.
This dedication is Sen. Matthews’ last official act in the Senate, which honors Oklahoma’s diverse heritage and invites a new wave of cultural tourism to these locations. The initiative represents a transformative step in acknowledging Oklahoma’s pivotal role in the nation’s civil rights history, offering a lasting tribute to the resilience and contributions of Black and Native communities that shaped Oklahoma.
