Father of Route 66

Tulsa is home to many influential people, but perhaps the individual who left the most lasting legacy was Cyrus Stevens Avery, better known as the “Father of Route 66.”

Avery was born in Pennsylvania, but eventually made permanent residence on a farm in Tulsa. He created the idea for Route 66 during his time serving as a member of the federal board appointed to found the United States Federal Highway System.

Throughout his life, Avery made numerous contributions to the nation’s highway systems, but he will forever be remembered by his groundbreaking ideas that eventually led to the development of Route 66.
