Oklahoma’s orphan wells: pioneering the carbon credit frontier

by The 100 Companies

At the North American Prospect Expo (NAPE) Energy Business Conference,
experts highlighted the potential of converting orphan wells into carbon credit sources. Among the panelists, Scott St. John from Oklahoma’s Red Dirt Energy emphasized the complexities involved in plugging these wells, including the absence of accurate records and the logistical challenges posed by their often remote locations.

The discussion underscored the environmental risks that orphan wells pose, with about 125,000 such wells across the country, and the innovative solutions being considered to mitigate these hazards. The initiative addresses environmental concerns and opens up new opportunities in the carbon credit market.
