The Club Special: Oklahoma’s Summer Export

by

A few years ago I was at Mountaintop Golf & Lake Club outside of Cashiers, North Carolina, on a golf trip and ordered a Club Special. I was stunned when the bartender looked at me blankly and asked, “What’s that?”

The Club Special was created at OKC’s Twin Hills Golf & Country Club in the 1960s by Bar Manager Clarence Casteel and Bartender Charlie Clemmons for two overheated golfers.

While most Oklahomans know about this perfect summer libation, the rest of the country remains largely unenlightened. I’m pleased to say, however, that the following summer it was listed on Mountaintop’s bar menu.
