Stay cool this summer, and try something different with a cold caipirinha (ki-pee-REEN-yah). The caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail and a cousin of the margarita. The drink is made with Cachaça (kah-SHAH-sah), Brazil’s national spirit. Cachaça is made from fresh-pressed, unprocessed sugar cane juice.
To make your own caipirinha you need:
½ lime
1 teaspoon white sugar (granulated or superfine)
2 ounces cachaça
Slice the lime into half-inch rounds, cube them and mix with sugar in a rocks glass. Add cachaça and a couple of ice cubes. Stir and serve.
