International Women’s Day is March 8 and the theme is #InspireInclusion. On the second floor of the State Capitol is a 9 foot by 22 foot mural, “Making Her Mark,” that exemplifies Oklahoma’s progress toward gender equality.
It honors four women whose work and leadership continue to inspire generations of new leaders: Dr. Shannon Lucid, the first female astronaut; Opaline Deveraux Wadkins, who organized the first school to train Black nurses; Chief Wilma Mankiller, the first female Chief of a major Tribal nation; and Senator Maxine Horner, one of the first Black women to serve in the Oklahoma State Senate.
