Sandra Day O’Connor, the trailblazing U.S. Supreme Court justice, passed away last Friday, Dec. 1, at the age of 93.
Justice O’Connor, born in El Paso, Texas, was nominated by President Ronald Reagan – who stated she is “truly a person for all seasons” – to be the first woman to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court justice. O’Connor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate with a 99-0 vote.
Previously, she served as a judge and state senator in Arizona and as chancellor of the College of William and Mary. In 2009, O’Connor was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
