Recently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has come under fire from Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, who say that the popular superhero movies contained within it are “not cinema” and “despicable.” Both have said that these movies don’t belong in the same conversation as their many classic blockbusters.
This begs the question, what determines the cinematic value of a movie? The movies of the MCU have grossed over $22 billion combined worldwide but have only earned three Oscars (all for “Black Panther”). Cinema or not, the movies are sure to be popular long after they leave the big screen.
