Celebrating its 300th anniversary, Natchez, Mississippi, is the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River. Tour some of its gorgeous antebellum homes during the annual Spring Pilgrimage March 5- April 5, when 24 homes are open.
Many are privately owned, and costumed descendants of the original owners will regale you with stories of the home’s history.
I visited several homes open for tours year-round. Work on Longwood ceased when the Civil War broke out, and the upper floors remain unfinished. Brave souls can take The Haunting of the Towers Tour and view the numerous collections in this extensively restored home.
