One of the biggest changes in the world of college sports took effect recently. The NCAA Board of Directors approved an interim policy that allows Division I, II and III athletes to monetize their name, image and likeness (NIL). This means that almost 500,000 college athletes will be able to participate in sponsorship deals, sign with agents and receive payments for endorsements, all without violating NCAA rules.
While the NCAA still works to adopt permanent solutions through federal legislation, the temporary policy aims to prevent “pay-for-play” situations and ensure fairness for these student-athletes.
