It’s never too late to go back to school. Some local adult literacy nonprofit organizations are providing free classes in time for the new school year.
According to Community Literacy Centers, nearly 140,000 Oklahoma City adults are functionally illiterate. Simple tasks like reading road signs or filling out forms are challenging. Adult literacy issues contribute to more than $230 billion a year in health care costs.
Community Literacy Centers and the Oklahoma Literacy Coalition provide resources for adults looking to learn to read or take classes dedicated to English as a second language. Both groups are looking for volunteers.
