The 10 Most Exciting Days in Oklahoma History

by

Oklahoma lawyer, historian and storyteller Bob Burke, says, “The 10 most exciting days in Oklahoma history are the first 10 days of 1963.” The story begins with Senator Robert S. Kerr’s death on Jan. 1, 1963.

Back then, the Governor was responsible for appointing Kerr’s replacement. It was rumored that both Kerr’s wife and son desired the appointment. On the day of Kerr’s funeral, conflicted Oklahoma Governor J. Howard Edmonson looked to President John F. Kennedy to ask, “Would you appoint Bob Kerr’s son?”

JFK’s response helped create one of the most important moments in the political history of Oklahoma.
