Capps, Johnson Receive Kate Barnard Awards

by The 100 Companies

In 1907, the first woman to win a statewide election in the U.S. was Oklahoma’s own Kate Barnard. As Commissioner of Charities and Corrections, she helped ban child labor, unsafe work conditions and provide state funds to widows dependent on children’s earnings.

The Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women founded the Kate Barnard Award in 1998 to honor outstanding women in public service. Citizen Potawatomi Nation Vice Chairman Linda Capps and Oklahoma County Commissioner Willa Johnson received the 2017 Kate Barnard Awards. Congratulations to both women for your leadership in tackling today’s causes and for helping Oklahoma families.
