October is National Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month. SIDS is the unexplained death of an infant under the age of one.

True SIDS is incredibly rare and often confused with more common causes of sleep-related infant deaths, such as accidental strangulation or suffocation. SIDS is only determined as a cause of death by the medical examiner after every other possibility has been excluded.

Following this simple safe sleep guide can dramatically reduce a baby’s risk:

• Alone, on his/her

• Back, in a

• Crib (no pillows, blankets, toys, etc.)
