Located near the heart of the state for which it is named, Oklahoma City was settled on April 22, 1889.
When Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907, Oklahoma City had become the new state’s population and economic hub. The city was transformed in 1928 when oil was discovered within city limits and Oklahoma City became a leader in the energy industry.
After a population decline in the 1970s and 1980s, the city passed the first Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) package in 1993, which sparked a successful turnaround. Since then, Oklahoma City has passed three additional MAPS packages and continued to develop.
