Boise City: Oklahoma’s Surprise Bombshell

by

Oklahoma never fails to astonish us when it comes to history.

At the end of the longer, skinnier chunk of Oklahoma lies Boise City, a small town with less than 2,000 people. But what makes Boise City special? It may not be its location, but rather its interesting history.

On July 5, 1943, Boise City was the only continental U.S. city to be bombed during World War II. The surrounding town lights confused pilots flying B-17 Flying Fortress Bombers, making them mistake Boise City as a target for practice.

Hopefully, Boise City isn’t still holding a grudge!
