Is the necktie a thing of the past?

by The 100 Companies

The ripple effect of the pandemic on our workforce and work habits is under full review. Companies are reassessing the work from home model versus a traditional fully staffed office balance.

With the Florida Capitol largely closed during the past months, there was a marked difference in attire. Without the necessity for men to go to the Capitol, the necktie all but disappeared in Tallahassee.

We are not alone. Relaxed standards and WFH programs have resulted in a 42 percent national drop in necktie sales, from sales of 3.7 billion nationally in 2018. Analysts are mixed on the possibility of recovery.

In my opinion, neckties will always have a place in Men’s fashion as well as a place in our closets. It’s been many years since a necktie was a workplace requirement, so I see the downturn in necktie sales as an indication that men simply haven’t needed to refresh their closest or add to their wardrobe in the part year because of COVID and working from home.
We own a small online necktie business and have seen a large (for us) uptick in sales over the past 30 days. Hopefully many other suppliers are sending the same thing.
