Giving Tuesday isn’t a tradition as old as you might expect.
The annual tradition originated in 2012 as a collection of tech companies and news outlets pushed the initiative forward under the term #GivingTuesday on social media. Coming in the wake of popular shopping days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday was a way to give back.
Over the next several years, participation grew and in 2016 an estimated $168 million in charitable giving was donated. The 2017 total is still to be determined, but there is still time for you to contribute to your favorite nonprofit organization!
