A renowned artist of Cherokee and Choctaw descent, Poteet Victory captured the forced removal of more than 60 tribes in the Monumental Trails of Tears Project.
The 14-by-60-foot triptych mural focuses on the healing of Native Americans and on teaching cultural understanding for all. The center panel uses imagery to illustrate the clash in cultures that resulted from families forcibly marched to Indian Territory. The first panel, ” Birth,” weaves together many tribal folklores of origin, and the second panel, “Rebirth,” visualizes a future of prosperity and the triumph of a people.
