The Church Studio introduces a new generation to ‘Tulsa Sound’

Near central Tulsa stands a gray cobblestone edifice that evokes images of an ancient Medieval castle – an apt resemblance for a building that has housed music royalty.

Hit songwriter Leon Russell purchased the former church building in 1972 and converted it into a recording studio that has attracted iconic musicians including Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Kansas, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty.

Today, the Church Studio is under renovations but will reopen as a recording studio and a museum to the artists who pioneered the “Tulsa Sound” musical style, many of whom passed through the studio on their way to stardom.
