A Close Call for Downtown Tulsa

by The 100 Companies

Next year marks the 90th anniversary of the USS Los Angeles’ historic flight over downtown Tulsa. The aircraft was known as a Zeppelin and its maximum speed was 79 miles per hour.

At the time of the airship’s appearance in Tulsa, the now 320 South Boston Building was known as the Exchange National Bank and featured a mooring tower – a landing strip of sorts for aircraft to dock atop buildings. The Zeppelin’s remarkable size, partnered with the close proximity (just 492 feet) of the Philtower to the bank, made it impossible for the Zeppelin to attempt mooring at the bank.
