• Parking meter — invented in 1935 by Carl Magee to bring in revenue and help free up parking spaces.
• Shopping cart — invented in 1936 by Sylvan Goldman for a new “No Basket Carrying Plan.”
• Voicemail — invented in the 1970s by Gordon Matthews out of frustration of playing telephone tag.
• PIKEPASS — invented in 1991 by Richard Ridings to record toll charges at highway speeds.
