Oklahoma has a long and proud history of powerful Black leaders. Perhaps one of the most outstanding was Oklahoma’s first Black state lawmaker, A.C. Hamlin.
Born to former slaves, Hamlin traveled to Oklahoma Territory with his parents in 1890. He later married Katie Weaver and together they had five children.
Hamlin’s legacy lives on through his astounding political career and work to secure better education for students regardless of skin color or ethnicity.
Hamlin died in 1912 on his farm in Logan County. He is memorialized today with a portion of Interstate 35, formally known as A.C. Hamlin Parkway.
